As pet parents, we want nothing more than to see our furry companions happy, healthy, and thriving.
Unfortunately, as a holistic vet there is no shortage of patients in my schedule that are affected by chronic inflammatory conditions. Inflammation is the most prevalent issue I face as a holistic vet and the cause of almost every long term chronic disease our pets encounter throughout their lives.
Understanding Chronic Inflammation in Pets
Inflammation is the body's natural response to injury, infection, or irritation. It's a protective mechanism that helps the body heal and fight off potential threats, however, when inflammation is constantly present it can lead to a host of health problems.
Chronic inflammation can manifest in a variety of ways, and it's important to be aware of the common symptoms. Some of the most common signs of inflammation in pets include:
Persistent skin irritations, such as hot spots, rashes, or excessive scratching
Recurrent ear infections
Digestive issues, such as diarrhea, vomiting, or loss of appetite
Joint pain and stiffness
Lethargy and decreased energy levels
With over a decade of experience as a veterinarian, I have identified these three factors as the primary causes of inflammation in pets today.

Diet
Many commercially available pet foods are loaded with artificial preservatives, fillers, and other ingredients that can contribute to inflammation in our beloved animals. These artificial preservatives, such as BHA, BHT, and ethoxyquin, are commonly used to extend the shelf life of pet foods, but they can have detrimental effects on our pets' health. In addition to these preservatives, many pet foods contain fillers like corn, soy, and wheat, which serve little nutritional purpose and can lead to digestive issues or allergic reactions in many pets. Highly processed kibble, in particular, is often devoid of the essential nutrients and antioxidants that our pets need to maintain a healthy immune system. The high temperatures and processing methods used to create these kibbles can destroy vital nutrients, rendering them ineffective and leaving pets with a diet that lacks the necessary components for optimal health. Furthermore, the absence of fresh, whole food ingredients means that pets miss out on natural sources of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients that are crucial for combating inflammation and supporting overall well-being. This lack of nutrient density can lead to a variety of health issues, including obesity, skin problems, and a weakened immune response, making it imperative for pet owners to carefully scrutinize the ingredients in their pets' food and consider alternatives that prioritize whole, natural ingredients over processed options.
Vaccines
While some vaccines are legally required and others are needed based on your pet's lifestyle and exposure, it is crucial to recognize that over-vaccination can result in an overactive immune system and chronic inflammation, which can have detrimental effects on a pet's overall health. Vaccines work by stimulating the immune system to recognize and combat specific pathogens, thereby providing immunity. However, when pets receive vaccines more frequently than necessary, their immune systems may become overstimulated, leading to an array of health issues including allergies, autoimmune disorders, and other inflammatory responses. To ensure the well-being of your pet, it is important to work closely with your veterinarian, who can assess your pet's health history, lifestyle, age, and breed to develop a vaccination schedule that is specifically tailored to meet your pet's individual needs. This personalized approach takes into account factors such as the pet's exposure to certain diseases, their risk of infection, and any pre-existing health conditions that may affect their response to vaccines. Additionally, your holistic vet will likely also recommend titre testing, which measures the level of antibodies in your pet's blood, to determine whether booster vaccinations are necessary. This can help prevent unnecessary vaccinations and minimize the risk of adverse reactions. Ultimately, a balanced vaccination strategy is vital for maintaining your pet's health and well-being throughout their life.

Parasite Prevention
The overuse of medications, particularly conventional tick and flea preventives, has become a significant concern in recent years. Many pet owners, aiming to protect their beloved animals from the discomfort and potential health risks associated with tick and flea infestations, often resort to these chemical treatments without fully understanding their implications. While these medications can be effective in managing parasites, their over-application can lead to a myriad of issues, both for the pets themselves and for the environment. The primary concern with the frequent use of these medications can have adverse effects on the health of pets. Many conventional tick and flea preventives contain toxic chemicals that can cause side effects ranging from mild reactions, such as skin irritations, to more severe health complications, including neurological disorders. Overmedicating pets with these products can increase the likelihood of these negative outcomes, prompting a need for more cautious and informed usage.
Beyond the immediate effects on pets, the environmental impact of overusing these medications cannot be overlooked. When pets are treated with chemical preventives, residues can enter the ecosystem through various pathways, including pet waste and runoff. These chemicals can harm non-target species, disrupt local ecosystems, and contribute to broader environmental issues, such as the decline of pollinator populations and contamination of water sources.
To address the overuse of conventional tick and flea preventives, it is essential for pet owners to adopt a more holistic approach to parasite management. This may include regular grooming, maintaining a clean living environment, and utilizing natural or alternative preventive measures that are less harmful to both pets and the environment. By fostering awareness and encouraging responsible use, pet owners can ensure the health and well-being of their pets, while also safeguarding the environment.
Conclusion
Chronic inflammation is a serious and often overlooked issue in pets, but it doesn't have to be a lifelong battle. By understanding the root causes of inflammation and taking a proactive, holistic approach to addressing it, you can help your furry friend to feel their best and enjoy a long, healthy life. So why wait? Take the first step towards taming the flames of chronic inflammation and give your pet the gift of vibrant health and well-being.
